Birdcage veils can be stylish and quirky; they’re also a cinch to make! Here is an easy Birdcage Veil tutorial for a classic and simple look.
To make your veil, you’ll need some netting or tulle, needle and thread, hair combs, a hot glue gun, and some pearl trim.
I started out with a yard of ivory Russian net, which is enough to make two small birdcage veils. Measure the netting across your face, positioning it with your hands so you can get the right angle and volume. You’ll want to keep the netting off of your face, and gather the sides to fit onto the comb, so give yourself a little wiggle room.
Cut the netting with a little room to spare so that you can sew the ends onto the combs comfortably. Take a needle and some thread that matches the color of your netting. Sew the ends of the netting onto the hair combs, gathering the fabric to create some volume. You’ll want to make tiny stiches that wrap between the individual tines of the comb, to make sure that the netting is strongly secured.
Next, don’t freak out because the stiches look a little crazy at this point. Take some pearl trim or satin ribbon and cut it so that it wraps around the ends of the combs where the netting is attached. You’ll want the edges of the trim to overlap a little on the backside of the combs (the side that will be against your hair). Take some hot glue and carefully glue the trim to hide the stiches where the netting meets the comb. Be careful around the delicate netting, since it tears easily and you won’t be able to pull off any bits of glue.
Sit back and admire your cute new veil. And when people ask you where you got it, proudly say “I made it myself!”
