Antique blue mason jars can add charm and subtle color to a vintage inspired wedding, but they can also be very expensive. Since mason jars are no longer made with blue glass, you can only find the blue jars at antique stores, flea markets, and thrift shops. Gathering all your blue jars can be time consuming and expensive, but this simple DIY project lets you color your own jars for next to nothing. Not only can you customize your color, but they are super simple and inexpensive!
You’ll need: glass jars, white school glue, water, foam brush, and food coloring. (I know, right?! You can make these with stuff you already have around the house!)
Mix 1 tablespoon of glue with 1 teaspoon of water, four drops of blue food coloring and 1 drop of green. We had gel food coloring, so we just eyeballed the color proportions and added more glue and water to reach the right consistency and color. You need to make sure that your mixture is not too watery, so that it adheres to the glass better and doesn’t bead up.
Apply the glue mixture to the outside of the glass jars with the foam brush. Make sure that your brush strokes go in the same direction. Let the jars dry and then apply a second coat of glue, as needed. We found that one coat was too little if the mixture was a little watery, but if it is thicker, one coat may be enough.
Don’t worry if the wet glue seems a little splotchy, it will dry quite evenly. The jars are not washable, so be careful when filling them with water.
How cool is that? You can make glass jars look like the antiques with things you already have in you cupboard!
