One of the first tasks on your wedding to-do list probably is (or should be) to take your engagement pictures with your sweetheart. Engagement pictures can be used for save-the-dates, to decorate with at your wedding reception, and of course to commemorate that blissful, “We just got engaged!” feeling. Not only are engagement pictures a great springboard for setting the tone for your soiree, they also can be one of the most fun parts of the whole wedding planning process.
Think about it. When else are you and your man going to get all dressed up and pose for romantic stylized shots with a photographer who is focusing solely on you?! Here are a few suggestions and ideas to make your engagement shoot a huge success.
1 | Pick a theme. You don’t have to be too literal, but picking of theme will set the tone for your whole engagement shoot (and you can even extend it into your wedding). Do you want to harness your inner glamour girl and channel 1950s Hollywood? Is a modern and quirky school theme the perfect way to announce your engagement to your high school sweetheart? What’s your favorite romantic movie? Use your theme to highlight your own love story and you are sure to have some great pictures!

2| Use props! Having something to hold, like an umbrella or a vintage suitcase will keep you from standing around awkwardly wondering where to put your hands. Having something to hold onto or work around (such as some cute furniture) will get you and your fiance’s minds off of the person behind the camera so that you can look relaxed and natural in your photos.

3 | Tell a story! One great way to make your pictures more candid is to have a story in you mind about the photo shoot. Pretend you are in a movie scene and get in to character. Your expressions will be more believable than if you just smile and say cheese!

4 | Dress up! Go ahead, you both have free reign to play dress up again. Go formal, vintage, or quirky. Have fun with it. Half the fun of a photo shoot is getting all dolled up anyway!

5 | Goof around. Do not be shy and stiff in front of that camera, missy! You don’t have to find a perfect pose in every shot. The photographer is probably going to be snapping several hundreds of pictures, and trust me you will both look so much better if you act natural, have some fun, and focus on each other. They best engagement pictures are the ones when a photographer can really capture the love between his subjects, so forget you are in front of the camera and focus on the man you are going to marry! He’s pretty great, right?
