Need a Name Change?
How do you change you name in Brazos County? The transition from Miss to Mrs. can be an overwhelming process for a new bride. We have answers.
Whether you are taking your husband’s last name or hyphenating, it is important to properly change your name on legal documents. While the process of name changing can be a big task to undertake, it is an important milestone in your marriage!
In order to change your name, you must have an official marriage certificate that is available at the county clerk’s office. Once you have received your certificate of marriage, you are free to legally change your last name. However, keep in mind that if you are going out of the country for your honeymoon, you should postpone changing your name, because your name needs to match all of your travel documents, primarily your passport.
Social Security Card
The first document you should update is your social security card. In order to change your name on your social security card, you must have a document that proves your name change; in this instance you would use your marriage certificate. You can easily update your social security record by printing out a social security request form that is available online. Once you have completed the form, you can mail it or take it to your local social security office. Once your social security card has been updated, you are able to change other legal documents including your driver’s license, passport, and banking information.
The Social Security Office for the Brazos Valley is opened from 9AM to 4PM and located at:
2120 West Briargate Drive
Bryan, TX 77802
While most records can be modified through the mail, your state driver’s license requires that you make a personal appearance at your local department of public safety, often referred to as the DPS. The Bryan DPS requires that a driver visit their office within 30 days of the name change. To process the name change a valid document showing the change is required (in this case you would use your marriage license). Once the process is complete, a paper copy of your updated license will be given to you on site, while your official driver’s license will be mailed to you in four to six weeks.
The Bryan Department of Public Safety is opened from 8AM to 5PM and located at:
2571 North Earl Rudder Freeway
Bryan, TX 77803
If you are looking to update your name on your passport, the process is relatively easy. According to the U.S. Department of State, you must mail in your current U.S. passport, a completed DS-82 form, applicable renewal fees (if any), an original or certified copy of your marriage certificate, and one recent color photograph of yourself. Once you have compiled all of those documents, you will send them to the address listed on the DS form, which is available online. The department highly encourages that you use a mailing system that is traceable, in order to know when your documents have safely arrived. The application process and turn-around time is approximately four to six weeks.
Changing the name on your bank account is an important step if you are planning to setup a joint bank account with your husband. The simplest way to change the name on your bank account is to go into a local branch. Have your newly-named driver’s license and your marriage license with you when you arrive. With these documents, the bank assistant will be able to change the account name on-site. In addition, you will be offered newly-labeled credit and debit cards, as well as checks; it is a good idea to update these. Keep in mind that some banks charge a fee for new checks and credit cards, while other banks do not. It ultimately depends on with whom you bank.
If you are planning to change your name on your voter registration certificate, the process is available online. Visit the official state of Texas website where you will find an online form you can submit. The form requires that you have a current driver’s license or identification card, social security number, and current voter registration card. Once you complete the short form online, you will receive your new voter certificate in the mail within 30 days. Visit texas.gov to update your voter registration card.

Some places will only require a phone call, while others may request a copy of your marriage certificate. While the process seems tedious, it is important to change your last name on all important documents to avoid confusion in the future.
